Anniversary Celebration
October 27, 2002
Each year the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Carmichaels pauses to remember and celebrate the construction of the church building.
Parish records indicate construction began on the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Carmichaels in May 1952. Father Sava Gnjatovich had come to the area as early as 1950, initiating the work necessary for the establishment of a parish. The church building was consecrated on October 31, 1954.
This year's anniversary celebration was held on Sunday October 27, 2002, the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, the Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, St. Petka-Paraskeva.
The sermon focused on the St.George Church as a canonical Orthodox Church, blessed by bishops as successors to the Holy Apostles.
The Anniversary banquet was held at Dolfi's in Masontown, a banquet facility owned by former St.George Church Executive Board President Stan Brozik and his wife Karen.
Speakers included Very Reverend Lt. Colonel Adam Yonitch, a former priest at the
St. George Church and current parish priest at Holy Ascension Serbian Orthodox Church in
Youngwood. Sonia Janson offered remarks in behalf of the St.George Choir and Circle of Serbian
Sisters. Mildred Bezjak spoke in behalf of the St.George Church School. Nurse Practioner Mitzie
Hunchuck commented on the developing Parish Nurse Program.
Following concluding comments by St. George Parish priest Father Rodney Torbic,
choir member Joe Katusa expressed thoughts regarding the benefits of daily religious
services at St.George Church.
Father Alexander Tandilashvili from St. Mary Orthodox Church in Masontown was present
with his wife Matushka Marina and their children at the banquet. Father James Bump from
All Saints Church in Masontown attended the banquet.
Brother Tom Somerfield, Pastoral Care Director at Mt. St. Macrina Manor in Uniontown and Br. Tom's friend Fr. Radoslav were also in attendance at the Divine Liturgy and banquet.
The Divine Liturgy was well attended by parishioners and friends as was the banquet.
