A Thought from His Holiness Patriarch PAVLE
At that time the early Christians kept all the tradition of the fast, understanding that
fasting is a holy institution from the Old Testament. God ordered the fasting periods as
an everlasting plan. In the New Testament Jesus Christ Himself fasted and taught His
Disciples to fast. The Apostles and Saints also kept this.
(1997 Serbian Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood Calendar,
p. 101.

To Consider
· Benefits to the soul of fasting.
· Spiritual and physical fasting.
· Discipline and cleansing of the mind, heart and soul.

From the Wisdom of Sirach
18:1
He who lives forever created the whole universe; the Lord alone will be declared righteous.
Ninth Sunday after Pentecost 2008
Matthew 14:22-34
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side,
while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the
mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. But the boat was now in
the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the middle of the
fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw
Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for
fear. Abut immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: "Be of good cheer! It is I, do not be
afraid." And Peter answer Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the
water." So, He said, "Come," and when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the
water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and
beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" And immediately Jesus stretched out
His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when
they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshipped
Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God." When they had crossed over, they came to the land
of Gennesaret.
During the storms of life, it is best to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for protection
and stability. The Lord Jesus Christ provides a calm harbor when the seas of life are stormy.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the anchor of safety.
The Lord Jesus Christ said: "On this rock I will build My Church and the powers of death
shall not prevail against it."
(Mt. 16:18) Jesus provides certainty in times of uncertainty.
The Psalmist said: "When I thought, 'My foot slips,' Thy steadfast love, O Lord, held me
up." (Ps. 93/94:18)
The Lord Jesus Christ helps when we do not expect it. The Lord Jesus Christ helps in ways we
do not expect.
We need only open our eyes to see Christ at work in our lives. We need only open our ears
to hear the words of Christ speaking to us. We need only open our hearts to invite Christ in.
Peter doubted when he stepped out on the water. When Peter had faith in Christ, he was
able to walk. When he doubted, he began to sink. Keeping faith in Christ in the stormiest
of times is important.
The Lord Jesus Christ said: "You will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who
endures to the end will be saved."
(Mt. 10:22) Being a Christian involves the cross.
Christ experienced the Cross. Christ does not ask of His followers to do anything He had
not done. Jesus said: "If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you; if they kept My word,
they will keep yours also." (Jn. 20)
Joy and peace exist in the Lord Jesus Christ. Believers experience joy and peace in Christ
when turning to Christ in faith and with expectation. Jesus receives believers coming to Him
in faith.
The waters of life provide a cleansing effect for the believer. Baptismal waters provide
new life in Christ. Holy water used to bless the home provides a renewal of creation,
a renewal of the living space set aside for God. Stormy waters in life draw a person to
Christ in faith.
Storms of life renew a person's vision of Christ and draw a person back to Christ.
Christ should not be sought only in times of difficulty. Christ should be of primary
interest throughout the year.
The present Gospel is a source of strength and reassurance for believers when life gets
tumultuous. Believers need to be confident in turning to Christ. Christ does not disappoint
believers.
Christ needs be an integral part of life if life is to be founded upon the rock of faith.
The Psalmist said: "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain."
(Ps.127:1) Life's stability comes with the Lord.
The journey from Baptismal fount to departure from this life varies in amount of time for
each individual. Most individuals live at least as long as the Psalmist indicates.
(Ps. 89/90:10).
Believers can expect ups and downs, trials and tribulations in life. Christ provides the
moral compass and the steadfast way to journey through life. Christ provides the nourishment
for the journey through life.
Life is more than a passing of time. Life is living in Christ and growing in Christ.
Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Me."
(Jn. 14:6)
Believers do well to assess the depth of faith in Christ and take steps during the
Dormition Fast to renew the faith in Christ. Jesus provides renewal through Holy Confession
and Holy Communion.
Jesus provides renewal through repentance and prayer. Jesus provides renewal by appeals
for His mercy and for forgiveness. Jesus provides renewal through charitable works in the
name of Christ.
The storms of life subside when the believer is anchored in Christ. The storms of life
are impetus to be anchored in Christ. The storms of life provide a vantage point to view
Christ as the certain and best solution and direction for life.
Christ saved Peter when Peter appealed to Him. Today is the day to appeal to Christ
and be renewed in Him. Today and everyday is the day to turn to Christ for renewal.
