A Thought from His Grace Bishop Dr. MITROPHAN
In order to realize the divine plan of the All-Holy Trinity concerning the salvation of
men in the Church, the Lord gave us the Apostles. He bestowed them with all of the gifts.
And just how are they Apostles? In that they function with the apostolic grace, which
they received from the Lord. The Lord is the leader in the building of the body of the
Church, and they are co-workers and co-laborers.

Translation Protopresbyter Stefan Zaremba. 2001, p. 54.

From the Wisdom of Sirach
36-1
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, the God of all,
and look upon us and cause the fear of Thee to fall upon all the nations
Twenty-Seventh Sunday after Pentecost 2008
Luke 13:10-17
Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was
a woman who had spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no
way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her,
"Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity." And He laid His hands on her, and
immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue
answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to
the crowd, "There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be
healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day." The Lord then answered him and said,
"Hypocrite! does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the
stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of
Abraham, whom Satan has bound-think of it-for eighteen years, be loosed from this
bond on the Sabbath?" And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put
to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.
The Lord Jesus Christ healed the woman with the infirmity that lasted eighteen years.
This healing was only one of the glorious acts by the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus' healing power continues to the present day. Serious believers are firmly
convinced that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever."
(Heb. 13:8)
The healing power of the Lord Jesus is the promising light in the darkness of a world
filled with news of corruption and tragedies. The healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ
offers hope in all circumstances.
The healing provided by the Lord Jesus Christ brings peace to the heart, mind and soul.
The healing provided by the Lord Jesus Christ is establishes peace in the midst of adversity
and great change.
Jesus heals the heart, mind and soul. Believers experience that healing when turning to
Christ in faith. Jesus brings peace to the body and soul in times of turmoil.
Jesus brings clarity to the mind and directions for life. Jesus provides love for every
person. Jesus forgives and welcomes individuals feeling abandoned and alienated.
The Church is in the midst of the Nativity Fast. This is a time of spiritual preparation
for the Feast of the Nativity. Believers faithful to the fast will constantly battle sin and
seek unity with Christ.
Holy Confession and Holy Communion bring the healing described in the present Gospel.
Holy Confession and Holy Communion unite the believer with Christ and strengthen the
believer for daily life.
The woman in the present Gospel suffered for eighteen years. Jesus made a distinct
and lasting difference in her life. In every generation, individuals choose Christ
and live the Christina life in His Holy Church.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the firmest foundation. The Psalmist said: "Unless the Lord
builds the house, they labour in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain." (Ps. 127:1)
Relations with the Lord God determine the present and future. Individuals choose between
life with God or destruction of the soul. The soul is destroyed in corruption. The soul is
destroyed by ignorance.
Believers have a responsibility to learn and to grow in Christ. God's Holy Church
provides for the instruction of believers. The Holy Gospel gives details on how to live
the life in Christ.
Individuals choose whether to invest in the life in Christ or to squander the time of
life in activities of no benefit to the soul. Prayer and fasting improve the decision making.
Each person at each moment of time defines his or her relationship with Christ.
Each person at each moment of time chooses Christ or the life contrary to Christ.
Until their last breath believers are expected to be faithful to Christ.
Until their last breath of earthy life and beyond faithful believers will experience
the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.
With spiritual eyes to see and spiritual ears to hear, believers will see Christ
at work in daily life. In peace and in adversity in everyday life, true believers see
and experience the presence of Christ.
Believers are never left alone. There is always Christ. Christ is always present
for each person drawing near in faith. Christ will always listen to the innermost
thoughts and heal unrest of the heart.
Christ provides hope when skeptics say there is no hope. Christ provides peace
when skeptics are overcome by fear and anxiety. Christ provides joy for believers
when many others would expect sorrow.
The Crucified and Resurrected Christ transformed the world. The Cross and
Resurrection changed the world forever. Believers draw strength from the love of
Christ revealed by the Cross and Resurrection.
Joy comes through the Lord Jesus Christ. Joy may come unexpectedly and after a long
period of adversity. The present Gospel shows that even after eighteen years with an
infirmity, Christ can bring joy.
We decide each moment whether to love and follow Christ. We decide each moment
whether to live with infirmities advanced by sin or be healed by the loving God.
The choices we make have lasting results.
