A Thought from Father Milovan Katanic Certainly we all have passions burning within us that, unless they are suppressed, will potentially send fire on us as well. Lent is that very time we are to use to take heed to that warning and to take flight as far as we can from those sins. A mere short distance will not do but it is the mountains we ourselves are called to go. May our eyes ever be fixated on that eternal prize glimmering in the eternal heavens, taking no frenzied glances at that which can only give us momentary pleasure.

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathaniel and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law; and also, the prophets wrote---Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." And Nathanel said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these." And He said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

The Lord Jesus Christ took on human flesh. He was visible and dwelt on earth. The Holy Scriptures spoke of Christ long before His Virgin Birth. Contemporary believers live in Christ and draw strength from Him.

Contemporary believers reveal the importance of Christ in their lives by the way Great Lent is honored. Individuals honoring the fast during Great Lent and increasing in prayer reflect honor and love for Christ.

Concern for the condition of the soul is of primary importance in Great Lent. Individuals seriously interested in the condition of the soul prepare for Holy Confession and Holy Communion during Great Lent.

Every day of Great Lent is important. Each day is a day to invest in the Kingdom of God. Parents do well to think about their souls and the souls of their children as they determine family activities during Great Lent.

Mothers and fathers preparing the family menu do well to think about the fasting practices of the Church. Parents preparing the family schedule for the week benefit by including attendance at Lenten church services.

Individuals required to work during Great Lent have the ability to pray wherever they are located. Silent prayer in the heart is possible under all conditions.

Great Lent is an excellent time to remember shut-ins, the homebound, those in hospitals and care homes. Every Christian can share the joy of Christ by brightening the day of a homebound or hospitalized person.

Remember the prisoners amongst us. Remember the men and women serving in harms way in the military. Remember those suffering with terminal illness and chronic debilitating disease.

Remember those suffering severe economic hardship. Income saved by fasting can be well-used as help for individuals in economic need.

Prayer is of primary importance during Great Lent. The Holy Orthodox Church is rich in prayer. The Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts is celebrated with regularity in the parish church. Plan to attend.
