From the Epistle to the Thessalonians
But I do not want you to be ignorant brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep,
lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word
of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means
precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will
rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Thomas Sunday
John 20:19-31
Then, the same day, at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were
shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the
midst, and said to them. "Peace be with you." When Jesus had said this, He showed them His
hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to
them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." And when He had said
this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the
sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other
disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to them, "Unless I see
in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put
my hand into His side, I will not believe." And after eight days His disciples were again
inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst,
and said, "Peace to you!" Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My
hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because
you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written
in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
The Holy Apostle Thomas wanted proof of the Lord Jesus Christ's resurrection.
People exist today who want proof of Jesus Christ's divinity and resurrection.
Proof of Jesus Christ's divinity and resurrection are experienced by believers putting
their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Believers putting their faith and trust in
the Lord experience Him in their daily lives.
The lives of believers are changed in proportion to their faith and trust in the Lord
Jesus Christ. The lives of believers are renewed in direct proportion to the faith and trust
they put into the Lord Jesus Christ.
Believers turning to God in faith and in trust find independent verification of the
presence of God everywhere in their daily lives. In ways expected and in ways unexpected,
Christ is manifested in the lives of believers.
Miracles continue to occur every day. Believers will see and hear of miracles that can
only be attributed to God. Miracles need not be proclaimed from the housetops or in the
national and international media.
Believers truly placing their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ are content in
seeing small signs of Christ that testify to His presence and to His power and divinity.
The Holy Apostle Thomas was convinced of the resurrection when he had the opportunity
to reach out and touch Jesus. Believers who live the Christian life each day will feel the
touch and presence of Christ particularly in times of need.
A kind word, a sympathetic phone call, an unexpected letter or visit are signs of Christ
at work in the lives of believers. When a believer is depressed or is in mourning, Christ
acts through others to lift the person from despair.
When a believer gets discouraged, Christ acts through others to offer signs of hope and
encouragement. Believers reap what they sow. Believers spreading their faith in Christ,
experience the faith of Christ in other believers they meet.
The Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ has great power to change lives. The Holy Apostle
Thomas declared: "My Lord and my God!"(Jn.20:28) Certainly the Apostle Thomas' life was not
the same after experiencing the Risen Christ.
The Holy Apostle Paul encountered the Lord Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus.
The Holy Apostle Paul's life changed dramatically.
(Acts 9:1-22) Believers are celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord
Jesus Christ at this time. The lives of current believers are changed to the degree the
Resurrection of Christ is experienced as currently celebrated.
The Precious Body and Blood of Christ transform believers.
Holy Confession, Holy Communion and Holy Unction bring healing and renewal.
The Holy Apostle Paul told the Corinthians: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
(2 Cor. 5:17) Believers trusting in Christ follow Christ and
listen to Christ.
True believers look to God for direction and turn to God in prayer. True believers
place confidence in God and are never disappointed. The lesson of Thomas Sunday is a
lesson of verification of the Resurrection.
The lesson of Thomas Sunday is convincing proof of the Empty Tomb and of the
Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. People want evidence. People want convinced.
Believers know that prayer brings proof. Believers know that faith brings proof.
Believers know that hope in God is never futile. Believers know that the relationship
with the Lord Jesus Christ is stronger than death, stronger than steel.
Martyrs die while convinced of the Risen Christ and unwilling to compromise their
faith in Christ. The Holy Apostles spread the Gospel of Christ in the face of great
hardship and adversity.
Individuals today make choices at every segment of time whether to be joined with
the Crucified and Risen Christ or to be joined with disbelievers and skeptics.
The joy of the Resurrection is not confined to Pasha. The joy of the Resurrection lives
in the hearts of believers who proclaim with the Holy Apostle Thomas throughout the year:
"My Lord and my God.!"
