- · Remember the sick, the suffering, the imprisoned, those in rehab centers,
the homebound, the mentally ill, their caretakers and the institution staffs.

- · Remember the workers in mines, law-enforcement, corrections, probation and
parole and firefighters, all working in dangerous occupations.

Religious life in America seems to be passing through a serious crisis. Recent polls,
taken on religious life in America indicate that religion is no longer what it used to
be - the strong spiritual force, with great influence in national, political, and social
life of men. According to the polls, religion is losing its influence. Why? The answer
is simple; we have made our religion too easy, and anything made easy is no longer
respected by men. Man's apathy toward easy made things is clearly expressed in all
areas of our life. Man respects challenges, not easy made things, and such an attitude
is quite natural.

The Second Sunday After Pentecost-2009
Matthew 4:18-23
And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter,
and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."
They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there,
He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother,
in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them,
and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness
and all kinds of disease among the people.
Parish churches are located in communities. The parish churches manifest the beliefs
of the members. Parish churches proclaim the Gospel and are witnesses for the Lord Jesus
Christ in their communities.
Parish churches influence the communities in which they are located and they are
affected by those communities. An interaction occurs between the parish churches and
the communities in which they are located.
Some parish churches take a stronger and more deliberate approach to reaching out
to the communities in which they are located. Other parish churches tend to focus
exclusively on the present parishioners.
The Lord Jesus Christ commissioned His disciples with the words: "Go therefore and
make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you."
(Mt. 28:19-20)
In the present Gospel, Jesus told Peter and Andrew: "Follow Me, and I will make
you fishers of men."(Mt. 4:19)
The Gospel of Christ is shared by believers in the way they live.
The Gospel of Christ has an impact on the lives of individuals taking the Gospel
seriously. Individuals taking the Gospel seriously become "new" in Christ.
They become "new creations."(II Cor. 5:17)
Christians do well to consider the impact of the parish on the communities in which
they are located. Christians do well to consider the impact of their personal behavior
on others.
Individuals identified as Christians are expected to act as Christ would have them to
act. Their behavior, language and thoughts should conform to the teachings and standards
set by Christ.
Individuals identified as Christians should adhere to Christian standards and ethics
in the community and in the work place. Christian behavior is intended to extend into
all aspects of life.
Christian behavior is not to be limited to the period of time a believer is in the
church building.
Christian employers are expected to treat their employees with due respect.
Christian employers and business owners are expected to adhere to ethical business practices.
Christian employees are expected to respect the employer and honor the employer
by working with due honesty and acting according to the moral standards set by Christ.
The Gospel is substantive in content and in the ability to bring change to human lives.
Communities can be transformed and improved when parish churches have parishioners strong
in faith and willing to live daily according to the Holy Gospel.
The love of Christ is multiplied when believers share this love with others in daily life.
The love of Christ experienced in the Holy Eucharist strengthens the communities of believers
sharing this love with others.
The Lord Jesus Christ taught if you want to attain eternal life: "You shall love your
neighbor as yourself."(Mt. 19:16-19). Love of neighbor is essential.
Believers must be willing to examine themselves carefully. Believers benefit by using
the fast periods of the Church to evaluate their personal lives to ensure personal life
corresponds with the teachings of Christ.
Without love paramount in the daily life of a Christian, a believer's profession of
faith is shallow. The First Epistle of St. John states: "My little children, let us not
love in word or in tongue but in deed and in truth." (I Jn. 3:18)
Jesus gathered together disciples and apostles. We are beneficiaries of the love of
Christ manifested in the lives of Jesus' disciples and apostles. We are beneficiaries of
the faithful Christians through the centuries.
Parish churches have a responsibility to be faithful to Christ in the proclamation of
the Holy Gospel in deed and in truth. Parishioners do well to be serious about the Holy
Gospel in their daily lives.
The present Gospel speaks about Jesus preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing
sickness and disease. (Mt. 4:23) Believers benefit from hearing
the Gospel of Christ and by being healed by Christ.
Parish churches are strengthened when believers heed the Gospel and live their
daily lives accordingly. The Gospel has far reaching effects when believers are
serious about Christ.
