A Thought from His Grace Bishop Dr. MITROPHAN
The Old Testament encompasses the Divinely revealed truth given to the chosen people of Israel,
with the purpose of preparing for the coming of the Messiah, the Savior of the world. The
immensity of the essential link between them is seen from the very frequent quotation of
the Old Testament in the writings of the New Testament in general.

From Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Ninth Sunday after Pentecost
Matthew 14:22-34
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side,
while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on
the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. But the boat
was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in
the middle of the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And
when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!"
And they cried out for fear. Abut immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: "Be of good cheer!
It is I, do not be afraid." And Peter answer Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me
to come to You on the water." So, He said, "Come," and when Peter had come down out of the
boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous,
he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" And immediately
Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why
did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in
the boat came and worshipped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God." When they had
crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
Prayer and faith are themes in the present Gospel. Developing a substantive practice
of daily prayer is necessary for the serious believer. Serious prayer is fundamental to
the Christian life.
The present Gospel documents that Jesus took time to pray alone on the mountain.
Believers benefit from taking time to pray with regularity and with attentiveness.
The rule of prayer needs to be manageable that it continues and becomes integral to daily
life. The rule of prayer should not be too much that the believer gives up in frustration.
The personal rule of prayer should be sufficient to meet the level of need and development
of the person. Daily prayer should be sufficient for the person to be at peace with God and
others.
Having resolute faith is emphasized in the present Gospel. Peter began to sink when his
faith in Christ wavered. Peter's fear was greater than his faith in Christ.
Resolute faith in Christ enables believers to conquer fear. The martyrs are perfect
examples of believers with maximum faith in the fear of death. The martyrs reveal a depth
of commitment unyielding to external threats.
Resolute faith in Christ is developed as a person matures in Christ. The more a person
invests in the Christian life, the more a person lives in Christ, the stronger a person's
faith becomes.
Believers will have their faith tested. Believers will have their faith challenged.
Temptations and attacks will appear unexpectedly. Choosing Christ enables fear to be
defeated and faith to triumph.
The love of Christ for each person was personalized when the Lord Jesus Christ ascended the
Cross. The love of Christ is personalized with Christ listening to each individual's prayer.
The love of Christ is personalized when His Precious Body and Blood is received by each
believer. The love of Christ is personalized when each believer hears the precious words of
the Holy Gospel.
The present Gospel identifies Jesus as the Son of God. Each person makes personal
decisions about the Lord Jesus Christ. Each person determines whether to believe in
Jesus Christ as the Son of God.
Each life is lived and shaped by the personal values and goals of the person.
Individuals valuing the life in Christ will live accordingly. Individuals valuing
a material and worldly life will reflect these values.
The Lord Jesus Christ said: "Where your treasure is, there you heart will be also."
(Mt. 6:21) Individuals need to sort through many alternatives each
day as they determine personal goals in life.
The Church provides a structure and a refuge for believers. The Church is a shield for
believers against worldly attacks. The Church provides nourishment for the souls of believers.
The Church provides an atmosphere of peace in times of storms and the rough waters in
life. The Church is a haven of love for individuals feeling unwanted and unloved.
A person can always begin anew in Christ. A person can always be confident of the love
of Christ. A person can always trust Christ. A person will never be betrayed by Christ.
A person may bare his or her soul to Christ in repentance and consider his or her grasp
on life as being very fragile. Christ will help the person rebuild his or her life with
certainty.
Individuals attentive to the words of Christ will heed those words and follow Him.
Christ leads individuals to experiences that far exceed personal goals and expectations.
Christ leads individuals from the depths of despair and depression to the heights of
the heavens. Christ leads individuals from venues of death to venues of life.
Christ's hand is extended for every believer to grasp in faith and in confidence. Christ's
hand is present always to be grasped and to be held for dear life in the midst of peril.
Christ's ever-present hand saves a person from drowning in the sea of despair and lifts
a person from defeat to victory in Christ.
