A Thought from His Grace Bishop Dr. MITROPHAN
Every member of the Church works on the growth of the Body of Christ, and this can be done
only if one first builds the Church of God and a place of love for his neighbor in himself.
Not only that, one must also work on one's own growth. From the beginning and until the end
of his life, man is a collaborator with God. The Divine synergism will not cease even in
the next life. An example of such Theandric cooperation is given in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Synergism is given in the Church and through the Church.
(The Teachings of Saint Apostle Paul on the Church
Translation Protopresbyter Stefan Zaremba. 2001, p. 59.
)
To Consider
· The celebration of St. Nicholas Day.
· The many lives continuing to be influenced by St. Nicholas
· The Christian love manifested in the life of St. Nicholas.

Psalm 37:3
Trust in the Lord, and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.
Twenty-Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
Luke 13:10-17
Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman
who had spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise
herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, "Woman,
you are loosed from your infirmity." And He laid His hands on her, and immediately
she was made straight, and glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue answered
with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd,
"There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them,
and not on the Sabbath day." The Lord then answered him and said, "Hypocrite! does
not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it
away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has
bound-think of it-for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?"
And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the
multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.
Healing comes from the Lord Jesus Christ. The healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ
is proclaimed throughout the centuries. Not everyone heeds the message. Too many people
suffer needlessly as a result.
Too many people ignore the healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ. Too many people
engage in frivolous pursuits. Too many people waste much of their lives in activities
with little or no lasting benefit to the soul.
The Lord Jesus Christ said: "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
(Mt. 6:21)
Believers do well to measure and assess the use of time each day. Believers do well to
consider carefully their use of time.
Life is a precious gift from God. Life is to be invested in the Kingdom of God.
Believers are to be good stewards of the time of life. The time of earthly life is
limited and has a beginning and ending point.
The way believers use the time of earthly life will influence the Last Judgment that
will occur when the Lord Jesus Christ returns. Parents will need to answer regarding the
way they let their children spend their time.
Husbands and wives will need to answer as to whether they spend sufficient time invested
in making their marriages conform to ways pleasing to God.
Employees will need to answer as to whether they were conscientious in the performance
of their duties. Employers will need to answer as to whether they invested sufficient time
caring for their employees.
Fathers and mothers will need to answer as to whether they spend sufficient time with
their sons and daughters teaching them about God and God's Holy Church.
Fathers and mothers will need to answer as to whether they were good Christian models
for their sons and daughters and whether they accompanied them to church services on a
regular basis.
Individuals will need to answer if they used their time wisely in being good stewards
of the talents they received from God. A person may be very gifted by God with a particular
talent.
If a person does not develop his or her special gift from God and does not employ the
talent in God-pleasing ways, the person will face Christ at the Final Judgment and be held
accountable.
The woman in the present Gospel healed by the Lord Jesus Christ became new in Christ.
She had the opportunity to tell others of the wonderful power and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Believers in every century healed by Christ have the opportunity to show their
appreciation to Christ by confessing Christ in the way they live.
Actions need to accompany a believer's profession of faith.
At Holy Baptism and at each Divine Liturgy, believers recite the Nicene-Constantinopolitan
Creed. The extent to which believers make The Creed an integral part of their lives will be
reflected in the way they live.
If the commitment to The Creed is shallow, sooner or later it will be evident.
If the commitment to The Creed is serious, this too, sooner or later will be evident.
The woman in the present Gospel suffered for eighteen years with her infirmity.
Jesus changed her life dramatically. Contemporary believers may feel they have suffered long.
They may feel they have suffered too long.
Jesus can change a person's circumstances radically and unexpectedly. The change can
bring great joy. Certainly after eighteen years the woman healed in the present Gospel
experienced great joy.
The healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ is unlimited. Individuals turning to Christ
with a conscientious commitment will experience healing in many different ways.
Healing by Christ can change a person's physical capabilities. Healing by Christ can
change the way a person feels about his or her physical capabilities.
Healing by Christ can lift the burden of the weight of sin carried for many years in
the unconscious. Healing by Christ can repair relationships between family members or friends.
Healing by Christ can enable a person to refrain from criminal behavior or other forms
of self-destructive behavior. Healing by Christ will transform individuals.
Joy due to healing by the Lord Jesus Christ is unlimited for believers turning to Him
in faith and love.
