A Thought from Proto Stavrofor Radovan Milkovich
In conclusion we can say that the religious and national education of the children will
be successful only if the parents take full participation by coming to church regularly
with their children and in the home see that they take full interest in their children's
education. In short, they must practice their religion, customs, language with words,
deeds and thoughts. They will consider the priest as their assistant in the education
of their children and not as their replacement, as the Serbian saying: "Brigo moja
predji na drugoga (Let my worry be somebody else's)
(Sermons and Speeches
Prepared for publication by Zivota Stevovich. Raska Skola, Belgrade, 1999, p. 16.

To Consider
· The lasting impact of consecrating a church.
· The memories created by attending a consecration.
· The commitment of faith put forth to build a church.

Psalm 71/72:13
He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
Matthew 17:14-23
And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him
and saying, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely;
for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples,
but they did not cure him." Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation,
how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me."
And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that
very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast
it out?" So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you,
if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,'
and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go
out except by prayer and fasting." Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them,
"The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him,
and the third day He will be raised up. And they were exceedingly sorrowful.
Faith in God is nourished through continued learning. Believers investing time in
learning about God renew their faith. New discoveries about God are always uncovered
by believers serious in faith. Personal relationships with God are strengthened as
believers seriously pursue and practice faith in God. Different relationships formed
with God and the joy of being united with God is revealed in unending ways. Each day
is a new opportunity to learn about God. Each moment of time is an opportunity to
discover the majesty, glory and love of God.
God does not only heal the sick and the suffering. God does not only provide peace
for the anxious and the stressed. God provides nourishment for the hungry soul and
enlightenment of the mind. God provides joy for the heart. God expands the dimensions
of daily living and opens doors for the use of talents and abilities. God provides
fulfillment in daily life that exceeds common expectation. Usefulness of purpose is
revealed to those seeking guidance and direction from God. The meaning of life and
the value of each person are revealed to the believer studying the Cross and the
Resurrection of Christ.
Earthly life is time limited from conception to the departure from this life.
Individuals make choices from the time the brain has the capability until the time
the capability ceases to exist. Responsible choices about faith lead to new discoveries
about God. Responsible choices about faith lead to enriched lives. The shallow practice
of faith is soon revealed when crises occur. The strong in faith endure and prevail in
Christ when crises occur.
The primary personal goals of each individual are revealed as the person lives his
or her life. The person choosing the life in Christ on a consistent basis becomes known
by his or her fruits. The Lord Jesus Christ said: "You will know them by their fruits."
(Mt. 7:16)
. The current Gospel extols the value of faith the size of a mustard seed.
(Mt. 17:20).
Attentively reading the Holy Scriptures is a certain way to nourish personal faith.
Reading the lives of the saints is a certain way of strengthening and enriching personal
faith. Attending the Divine services of the Church and simply coming to church to pray
and think about God are ways to renew and deepen personal faith in God.
The evidence of God and the goodness of God are overwhelming. Individuals with
investigative and open minds will readily see the evidence of God's goodness.
Skeptics will question and challenge the evidence of the goodness of God. God's
timing and purpose are not always immediately discernible to the believer.
Patience and faith are necessary in seeking understanding. The Second Epistle of
St. Peter states: "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness,
but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should
come to repentance."
(II Peter 3:1-9)
The current Gospel emphasizes the benefits of prayer and fasting.
(Mt.17:21).
Consistent prayer and fasting require discipline and belief in God that benefits will
accrue to the soul. Praying to God and fasting implies an accompanying hope and certainty
that God knows of the efforts and will heed them. Prayer and fasting are expected to be
in a spirit of love for God and not in ways that are condemning of the believer.
Authenticity is expected in prayer and fasting. Personal pride that would lead to
personal downfall has no place in prayer and fasting. Personal aggrandizement has
no place in prayer and fasting. Humility as God intended is expected to characterize
Christian prayer and fasting. The Lord Jesus Christ said: "When you pray, go into your room,
and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place."
(Mt. 6:6)
The Lord Jesus Christ also said: "When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so
that you do not appear to men to be fasting but to your Father who is in the secret place."
(Mt. 6:17-18)
Believers have the ability to grow in Christ as long as their minds and hearts have
the capability of faith and discernment. Christ helps believers dispel the demons of life.
Christ is the source of confidence for believers in the face of adversity and uncertainty.
Development in Christ takes believers to new levels and new experiences. Talents and
treasures received from God are multiplied as the believer invests with faith.
(Mt. 25:14-30)
The current Gospel was an example of Jesus teaching His disciples the benefits of
prayer and fasting. We are beneficiaries of this lesson. We are beneficiaries of disciples
through the centuries being faithful to Christ. God's Holy Church is the repository of
stories of personal faith yielding amazing results. Amazing results need not be on the
marquee of a local theater or on the front page of the newspaper or the lead story on
the television news. Amazing results can be a personal answer to prayer that is known
only to the believer and God but which is a certain validation of the love of God.
This validation of love will change the believer and the believer will manifest God's
love in different ways.
