From the Desert Fathers
Abba Poemen often said, 'We do not need anything except a vigilant spirit.'
Luke 10:42-But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part,
which will not be taken away from her."
The Lord Jesus Christ confirmed the wise decision by Mary to sit and listen at His feet.
The Lord Jesus Christ confirmed the lasting value of Mary's decision.
The Lord Jesus Christ gave each person of each subsequent generation something to think
Every person makes decisions at each element of time. Each decision either draws a person
closer to Christ or distances the person from Christ. Mary chose to draw near to Christ.
She chose not to be distracted.
The Lord Jesus Christ said: "Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."
Each person uses the time given by God for what is most important to the person.
Each person uses the talents and resources given by God for what is most important to
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
(Mt. 6:21) Mary placed the Lord Jesus Christ first in her life.
Each of us must ask what position Jesus Christ holds in our life?
Joachim and Anna chose to take their daughter Mary to the Temple. Joachim and Anna
held the Temple to be important in their lives. Contemporary parents determine the
importance Church has in their children's lives and in the life of the family.
If the Lord Jesus Christ is welcome in the family home, if family life is Christ-centered,
if life in the home is consistent with the Baptismal commitment and the Orthodox marriage,
then life in the home will reflect the values of Christ.
If social activities, financial gain, power and glory of the person hold the greatest
importance in a family, Christ is pushed aside and perhaps excluded all together.
Families can always recover and return to Christ. Families can always determine that
a wrong foundation has been established, that the wrong priorities have been adopted.
Prayer and fasting, return to the Church and living the life of the Church are steps
that can bring about a change in the ways of the family for the better.
One person committed to Christ in a family can help a family make a change for the better.
The Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple gives believers choices to make.
The Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple gives believers instruction from
the Lord Jesus Christ.
Not everyone chooses to listen to the Lord Jesus Christ. Individuals listening to
Jesus benefit and are enriched.
