If you are Too Busy to Pray...You are Too Busy!
Mark 2:20 - But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them,
and then they will fast in those days.
Fasting is a way to prepare for the glorious Second Coming. Fasting is a way to
draw closer to the way of Christ. Fasting is a way to address the seriousness of
preparing for Christís return.
Fasting helps believers redirect their lives. Fasting increases a personís
conscious thoughts about God and the ways of God. Parents can teach children this
lesson. Parents changed through fasting and prayer become examples for their children.
Children will observe their parents and others in the family home. Children
will learn from comments in the family home about fasting. Children will learn
from remarks heard in the parish church about fasting.
Sermons in church and lessons in the church school serve to offer important
information about fasting and reasons to fast. Having an overall view of fasting
is very helpful.
Knowing the full extent fasting has in the Orthodox life can make a
difference in the approach to fasting. The culture and practices of each
parish church will influence the development of parishioners.
Learning about fasting is a life-long process. Children do not learn
everything about fasting at home. What children learn about fasting at home
will definitely affect them.
Children do not learn everything there is to learn about fasting in church
school classes. Church school classes can help children to form a foundation in
understanding fasting. Classes can increase a childís information about the
teachings of the Church.
The sermons of the priest can put fasting into a broader perspective.
The sermons of the priest can encourage parishioners to examine their practices
of fasting and to improve. Teachings in the parish church about preparing for
Holy Confession and Holy Communion can improve fasting practices among parishioners.
Parishes can grow and become stronger over time. Fasting can help with this growth.
While fasting seeks for the person to simplify life and center life in Christ,
fasting is not necessarily a simple subject reduced to being done a few days per year.
The salvation of the soul is linked to fasting. People taking great care for their
souls will think carefully about fasting and will make an effort to fast as the
Church would have them fast.
Fasting can open a personís eyes and ears to the greatness and majesty of God.
Fasting can help a person become more caring about Godís creation.
Fasting can bring people closer together as God would have it.
