If you are Too Busy to Pray, You are Too Busy!

Luke 10:42 - But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.

Jesus told Martha that Mary chose the good part. Jesus told Martha that Mary’s choice was a wise choice, a sound investment. Mary chose to lay up “treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not consume and thieves do not break in and steal.” (Mt. 6:20)

The Psalmist said: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Ps. 18:2)

The Church is not the local firehouse. God is not the local fire department. Certainly believers can turn to the Church in an emergency. Certainly believers can call upon God in times of emergency.

Believers have a responsibility to practice faith in God throughout each day, throughout each year. Living the faith daily prepares believers to handle crises that may arise.

Living the faith each day strengthens the believer to respond in times of difficulty. Mary apparently knew the value of giving her attention to Jesus. Mary apparently knew and valued hearing Jesus directly.

Many choices arise in life. The alternatives can appear attractive. Believers must be careful not to be deceived. Jesus told Martha that Mary chose the one thing needed. Believers must be careful to follow the narrow path. (Mt. 7:14)

Mary the Mother of God chose to be obedient to God. Mary said: ”Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” (Lk. 1:38) Mary the Mother of God was born into this world for an unequalled honor.

Mary the Mother of God lived her life in ways pleasing to God. She lived her life in ways that she continues to be held with the highest of esteem and reverence among believers.

Believers turn to the Mother of God in prayer. The celebration of the birth of the Mother of God is a celebration of her entering this world. Jesus would enter this world through Mary and the world would become different.

Mary the Mother of God served as the gateway for Christ to enter this world. A different Mary serves in the present Gospel to underscore the value of being attentive to Christ.

Attentiveness to Christ means giving the full mind and heart to Christ. Attentiveness to Christ means keeping the mind and heart free from distractions. Attentiveness to Christ means living in ways that keep the body pure for service to Christ. Mary the Mother of God is the best example of purity among humans. Mary the Mother of God continues to be the primary human model of purity for believers. Mary the Mother of God exemplifies unity with Christ in purity.
