If You Are Too Busy To Pray,
You Are Too Busy
Matthew 17:20 - So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;
for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed,
you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’
and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
The disciples suffered from unbelief.
Contemporary believers do well to examine their own
lives and determine the degree of personal unbelief.
The way a person lives will reflect the degree of
personal belief in Christ as King and as God.
Belief in Christ as King and God is professed at Holy Baptism.
Each time the Nicene Constantinopolitan Creed is recited,
belief in the Holy Trinity is reaffirmed.
Care must be taken throughout life not to reduce
the complete commitment to Christ expected at Holy Baptism.
Care must be taken throughout life to honor the profession
of faith in the Holy Trinity.
Holy Confession and Holy Communion and constant attendance at the Divine Liturgy
are ways to remain united with Christ and faithful to Christ.
Jesus told the disciples the value of strong faith.
He said nothing would be impossible if the disciples
had the faith of a mustard seed.
How often do we hear about individuals suffering from fear and anxiety?
How often do we personally experience fear or anxiety?
Firmness of belief in Christ is necessary
for the defeat of obstacles preventing personal peace.
Firmness of belief in Christ is necessary
for successful completion of the journey to the Kingdom of God.
Matthew 17:21 - “However this kind doe not go out
except by prayer and fasting.
Jesus asserts and establishes the value of prayer and fasting.
He told the disciples directly that prayer and fasting were necessary
for healing the child with epilepsy.
There are no shortcuts to the Kingdom of God.
The journey requires commitment and exertion of faith.
Jesus said: ”And from the days of John the Baptist until
now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force.”
Blessed Theophylact understands Jesus to say:
“that many are by force acquiring the kingdom of heaven,
that is, faith in Him.” 1
Believers seeking the kingdom of God must have
the willingness to exert the necessary effort.
Sacrifice is necessary to concentrate on Christ.
Temptations and diversions must be cast aside to enter by the narrow gate.
The mind must be exercised as the barrier against temptations and yielding to sin.
Discernment is necessary to guard against attractions that put the soul in peril.
Prayer and fasting strengthen a person in Christ.
Prayer and fasting are definitive methods to help a person grow in Christ.
