Feast of the Elevation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross
John 19:6-11, 13-20, 25-28, 30-35

The Feast of the Elevation of the Cross requires believers to think carefully about the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ was gruesome. To watch a crucifixion would be revolting to the conscience.

The Lord Jesus Christ’s beloved disciple and His mother were among the witnesses to His Crucifixion (Jn. 19:26) The presence of the beloved disciple and Jesus’ mother demonstrated their love and support for Him.

When life-defining and death threatening situations occur, the presence of a person’s mother and friends can be very important. Love comes to the fore in situations of ultimate stress. Honesty comes to the fore in situations of stress.

The authenticity of Christ is revealed in the extreme circumstances of the Cross. The Gospel of St. Matthew records the observation of the centurion and those with him witnessing the Crucifixion. (Mt. 27:54)

The Gospel of St. Matthew states: “When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, ‘Truly, this was the Son of God.’” (Mt. 27:54)

Believers experience Christ in extreme moments of their lives. The faith of believers is tested in extreme situations of life. Serious believers resolute in their faith experience the love and presence of Christ in times of extreme stress.

Christ enables serious believers to handle stress. Christ enables serious believers to face stressful circumstances with confidence. When a believer is firmly rooted in and united with Christ, external threats are minimized and put into perspective. The relationship with Christ is paramount for the serious believer.

The Cross revealed Christ’s divinity. The Cross revealed death could not defeat Christ. The Cross led to an Empty Tomb that changed the world forever.

The Feast of the Elevation of the Cross requires believers to think anew about the Crucifixion each year. The Feast of the Elevation of the Cross requires believers to think carefully about the significance of the Cross.

The Holy Apostle Paul told the Corinthians: “I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (I Cor. 2:2) Each believer does well to assess whether Jesus Christ is first and foremost in the heart, mind and soul.

Each believer does well to consider if Christ crucified is viewed carefully and seriously. Believers have to contend with sin and temptations to sin on a daily basis. Believers have to contend with and make the best of life on a daily basis.

Strength, nourishment and meaning are experienced in the Lord Jesus Christ. Joy, peace and courage come from the Lord Jesus Christ. Serious believers will focus on Christ and measure all thoughts and actions according to Christ.
